People have shot down drones in southern New Jersey and rural California as well. It's illegal, and they get arrested for it.The security threats from drones are real, and the government is taking them seriously. In January, a man lost control of his drone, which crashed on the White House lawn. In May, another man was arrested for trying to fly his drone over the White House fence, and another last week for flying a drone into the stadium where the U.S. Open was taking place. Drones have attempted to deliver drugs to prisons in Maryland, Ohio and South Carolina -- so far.

There have been many near-misses between drones and airplanes. Many people have written about the possible terrorist uses of drones.Defenses are being developed. Both Lockheed Martin and Boeing sell anti-drone laser weapons. One company sells shotgun shells specifically designed to shoot down drones. Other companies are working on technologies to detect and disable them safely. Some of those technologies were used to provide security at this year's Boston Marathon.Law enforcement can deploy these technologies, but under current law it's illegal to shoot down a drone, even if it's hovering above your own property. In our society, you're generally not allowed to take the law into your own hands. You're expected to call the police and let them deal with it.There's an alternate theory, though, from law professor Michael Froomkin. He argues that self-defense should be permissible against drones simply because you don't know their capabilities. We know, for example, that people have mounted guns on drones, which means they could pose a threat to life.

List includes the most popular Quadcopter and Drone manufactures of both Hobby and Professional RC Drones, along with a link to some of the Best Drones you can buy. This list is not complete, but will be updated as more reputable company’s enter the market.

DJI Innovations is headquartered out of Shenzhen, China and they are the most popular Drone Makers in the industry. They produce the phantom series quadcopters with GPS First Person View. Their products are aimed at both hobbyists and professionals. The DJI Phantom 3 is one of the best ready-to-fly video enabled quadcopters on the market and the Phantom 2 is a good choice for those with a GoPro camera. DJI’s latest addition to the consumer market are the DJI PHANTOM 4 PRO  the New DJI Mavic Pro . Parrot a French company, Headquartered in Paris, is a new entrant into the UAV/ quadcopter market, its main specialty is wireless devices for mobile phones and automobiles (i.e. Bluetooth hands free kits). Surprisingly, it has seized a large part of the consumer UAV/ quadcopter market with the AR.Drone and its successor the AR.Drone 2.0 a mid- range hobby drone with integrated FPV system, controlled by a smartphone app. Their Bebop 2 Drone is an advanced quadcopter with lots of features.

3D Robotics is based out of Berkeley, CA . They produce their quadcopters in Tijuana, Mexico and their engineering department is based in San Diego. Best known for their IRIS Plus model and now also available the world’s first “smart drone” SOLO . They produce autonomous drones with GPS way point planning and other features. , an excellent source for quadcopter and aerial craft information. Hubsan is based out of Dong, China and has become well known with its Hubsan X4 models, including the popular entry level Hubsan X4 H107C and the Hubsan H107D FPV X4 Mini RTF Quadcopter among others and has made it a household name in the drone hobbyist market. Check out the New Hubsan Plus Models NOW available. Blade a hobby product distributor based out of Champaign, Illinois and is owned by Horizon Hobby, they manufacture the Blade range of Quadcopters. They offer some enhanced features such as SAFE to make flying their craft easier and safer. From helicopters to multi-prop drones, Blade has many options available, its most popular model is the Blade Nano QX, a great beginner quadcopter.

For photography check out the BLADE CHROMA DRONE and the NEW BLADE ZEYROK DRONE now available. JJRC (JJRC Toy Co. Ltd) is another Chinese toy manufacturer making robots, toy guns and remote-controlled vehicles of all types. They really have a very extensive collection of toys, the majority are remote-controlled in some way. The H6C RC Quadcopter with 2.0MP camera is one of many small drones they make and the JJRC H26D 3MP HD RC Drone is a hobby size drone. Syma Toys is located in Shantou, China. This drone maker is best known for its remote controlled helicopters, though they have recently broken into the drone market with the highly popular  X5C  (Upgraded version) X5C-1 Explorer 2015 Version is one of Amazons best selling quadcopters. Popular models include the small Syma X11 mini-quadcopter and  one of the latest models includes the Syma X5SW Plus Quadcopter Drone with WiFi FPV Camera among others just introduced recently. UDI RC Toys is a newer manufacturer but receiving good reviews for their products. 

Also based in China, they make an entire line of radio controlled craft from cars and boats to helicopters and quadcopters. Popular models include the UDI U818A RC Quadcopter and the new UDI U818A WiFi FPV RC Quadcopter Drone with HD Camera. Walkera has a drone factory located in Guangzhou City, China. Walkera is a drone manufacturer that offers a range of drone models, originally selling quadcopters like the QR LadyBird V2 Mini Quadcopter and Walkera QRX 350, but now seem to be concentrating more on drone racing, with models like the Walkera Rodeo 150 RTF FPV Quadcopter and the Walkera Furious 320 Racing Drone. Cheerson Hobby Technology Company Limited was established in 2011. They are based in China in the Guangdong province. Cheerson Hobby specialize in the design and manufacture of many kinds of remote-controlled toys, in particular, the Cheerson CX-20 open source Drone, which is a mid level GPS drone with Camera Gimbal support for semi-professional aerial video production.

Best known for the CX-10 Mini Quadcopter. New models include the Cheerson CX-10WD and CX-33S FPV, along with a new design, the Cheerson Jumper CX-91 Brushless HD Racing RC Quadcopter. Hobbico is located in Champaign, Illinois and is the world’s largest retail and wholesale distributor of hobby products. The company distributes about 30 brands of hobby products including several proprietary product brands that include: Dromida Ominus, Estes Proto X and Heli-Max along with many other RC models. Yuneec is the world leader in electric aviation. Headquarters are in Kunshan, Jiangsu, China. With offices in North America, Europe and Asia, Yuneec manufactures over 1 million units a year that are sold under OEM/ODM brands. In 2014, Yuneec introduced the world’s first ready-to-fly, out-of-the-box drone. The Typhoon Q500 quadcopter. In 2015, Yuneec improved the Typhoon by adding a 4K camera and introducing a SteadyGrip that turns the Typhoon into an “Air and Ground Imaging Solution.”
