More than just an Art TeacherTulsans are qualifying to become commercial drone pilotsKTULAAThe first tests have been given to people who want to be commercial drone pilots.Those tests are now available at three locations in the Tulsa area.They are Christiansen Aviation, The Spartan School of Aeronautics and Tulsa Tech.At least three drone pilots passed the test at Christiansen on Monday.They all told Tulsa’s Channel 8 that the material was more difficult than they expected, with a lot of emphasis on things like complex aviation charts.However, a commercial drone pilot who is already licensed said the new Federal Aviation Administration system is a step down when it comes to safety.Dale Parrish, of Hover Vision, already has his commercial drone certification, because he’s also an airplane pilot.Parrish said he’s concerned that the FAA hasn’t set a very high standard."I see the movement to make things more accessible, which I am in favor of, has taken a huge step off a cliff to make it way too easy,” said Parrish.He also said that commercial pilots should have liability insurance and he warned potential customers to do their homework.

Parrish said they may find a new drone pilot with bargain prices, but they may not be pleased with the results.Bill Christiansen, of Christiansen Aviation, said they have welcomed any steps, that make drone flying more controlled."They're tiny you don't see em. They’re not talking to anybody on approach control, or departure control, or to the control tower. So I think having the FAA step in and have these guys take the test is a really positive step."The student who took the test spent several hundred dollars and did several weeks of studying to get ready.70% is a passing grade and Brian Smith told us he got an 80% score.Smith, operates Ideaship Studios and he will use his drone flying for video production.He said the test will weed out people who aren’t serious about the process."Anybody who takes this test and invests this money and does the work and commits to this.
