Developers tested a fire-starting drone on a 26-acre grassland at the Homestead National Monument of America on Friday near Beatrice to show how it can aid firefighters.[Video: Fire-dropping drones bring on the heat]Prescribed burns are needed to prevent wild fires and keep invasive plant growth from taking over.

In the past 10 years, five people have been killed and several others have been injured in burns around the country.Park superintendent Mark Engler said he believes the technology has the potential to change things and to make the work safer.The unmanned aircraft hovered over a field and dropped little balls injected with fire-starting chemicals to the ground.It takes several seconds after the balls hit the ground before they ignite."It's beneficial not have us walk through the middle and lighting down with our drip torch," said Bob Bundy, who is with Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota.Friday’s gathering was the first outdoor testing of the fire-starting drone on public land.“We're definitely traversing new ground here,” said Sebatian Elbaum, cofounder of the Nebraska Intelligent Mobile Unmanned Systems Lab at UN-L.In Beatrice, trained firefighters on the ground established a perimeter using their traditional methods, but then they let the drone go to work in a more dangerous area.“
