storm drone 6 price

Posted by Robert on Sep 7, 2014 in Reviews, Slider Display | The Storm Drone 6 is an interesting candidate for my next UAV.  One of the main reasons that this particular UAV made the short list was due to the fact that it had 6 props/motors rather than the 4 that all of the others on the list have.  This would provide extra stability for photography/videos while in flight and provides a little more safety if you have a single motor failure.  It is one of the least expensive options out there for a UAV with more than 4 motors in the price range of $660 to $1600 not including the cost of a camera.  Before we start digging into the Storm Drone 6 let’s take a look at the specifications of the base model. The specs on a base model without any upgrades according to their website are: Dimension : 550mm x 550mm x 280mm Motor to Motor : 510mm Flight Controller : DJI NAZA Lite w/ GPS Module (Setup for DEVO 7 transmitter) Propeller Size : 8″ X 4.5″ Carbon Fiber Propeller (Clockwise and Counter Clockwise)
Take-off weight : 1250g (Max safety 1900g) Motor : 2212 Brushless Motor ESC : 20A with BEC Battery : 11.1V 2500mah 28C (4 minutes flight time), 11.1V 5500mah 35C will provide 9 to 10 minutes of flight time Not too bad except for the 4 minute flight time if you go with the single small battery.  ar drone 2 payloadThey do have the option to run two small batteries so that you have a longer flight time and if I select this UAV I will be going with either the larger battery or two of the smaller batteries for that reason.ar drone 2 rc mod Pre-Assembled Storm Drone 6 GPSar drone 1 mods Landing Skids (Need to put on the drone)ar drone 2 linux control

Pros – 6 Props for additional safety and stability, Able to carry larger payloads, Multiple upgrades available Cons – Base unit only has 4 minutes flight time, Need multiple upgraded components to achieve desired specs, Cost of acceptable design is pushing limits of UAV budget
First let me say that this is a very intriguing UAV that has tons of potential.  After searching many of the forums out there it does seem to get mixed reviews for a couple of points. The two biggest complaints that I have seen repeated over and over about this craft are about the landing gear not being all that reliable and painful to install and the lack of a quality user’s guide/manual. It would appear that the not so great documentation can make this RTF craft not such a quick startup as one would expect when purchasing a RTF UAV.  After those two it seems that it becomes just a matter of the features a person is seeking as well as the opinions that people have on buying a RTF vs build your own UAV. For me personally, in my search for a new UAV the biggest issue is cost if I were to outfit this to a point that I would be happy with it.  I would have to go with a larger battery, purchase the camera gimbal, upgrade to the NAZA-M V2 GPS and get the camera positioning kit.
With these added features the base cost for me would be $1160 and then I would still need to go out and purchase a Go Pro camera which ups the cost by another $200 to $400 dollars depending on which camera I choose.  That takes the starting price of this set-up into the neighborhood of $1360 to $1560 which if not out of the amount I want to spend at least pushing the outer boundary of my UAV budget. I will keep this UAV in mind but based on the startup cost it may have to be a future possibility if any of the other craft that I am considering are close to it on the features that I want with a lower price point.  But we won’t know for sure until the reviews are done.
