That might soon be possible, thanks to Samsung and its ‘Skin’ smartphone technology, which according to a report from the , is currently being trialled with select customers before being rolled out across the globe. So, what is it exactly? Skin uses a plastic polymer instead of glass to create an AMOLED display that can not only bend (check the video below), but also roll — just like a Cuban cigar — and survive what would otherwise be screen-shattering drops.
It also makes the device lighter and potentially even wearable.The picture above is the 2011 mock up. Samsung is now said to be in the last phase of development with prototypes out in the field being bent all over the shop by human hands. The trickiest part of all this is the manufacturing process — both Sony and LG have tinkered with flexible displays, but fell at the mass production hurdle — but reports suggest the electronics behemoth has cracked that and is looking to flood the market with bendy devices (smartphones, tablets and who knows what else) in the first half of 2013. If it does manage that, it could be the first major differentiation we’ve seen in on mobile platforms for a long time. And that’s hugely exciting. As is the fact your phone or tablet could soon double up as a brilliant projectile-launching catapult for livening up the duller moments of those office meetings. Look Out For Black Friday And Cyber MondayDon’t be too alarmed if you’re hearing talk of or reading emails about ‘Black Friday’.
The world is not about to end. Black Friday is the deceptively Apocalyptic moniker for the Friday after Thanksgiving in the US and signals the start of the Christmas shopping season, when retailers offer whopping great discounts on their products to kickstart the spending.Happily — and despite the fact no one in the UK understands Thanksgiving — the Black Friday phenomenon has made it across the pond, care of e-tailers like Amazon. So if you’re looking for a pre-Christmas bargain or you’re the sort of terrifyingly organized obsessive who has all their presents bought early, this coming Black Friday (24 November) is for you. Don’t expect to find any cutting edge technology on offer, but you can still grab some excellent kit at a decent discount, including Digital SLRs and even the Kindle Fire (discount will be revealed on Friday). As for Cyber Monday? That’s the first Monday in December and the busiest online shopping day of the year for us Brits, when we spend millions on special deals in just a few hours.
On Cyber Monday on December 5 last year, Amazon UK was receiving 35 orders a second with a delivery truck leaving the warehouse every 2 minutes and 45 seconds. They’re expecting peak orders this Cyber Monday (December 3 — save that date!) at around 9:20pm. As well as Amazon, keep your eye out for Cyber Monday deals from retail giants including PC World, Tesco, Toys R Us, Boots and other high street stores, leaving plenty of cash in your pocket for Christmas festivities.Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2 Care PackageThere’s one thing you won’t find in Black Friday or Cyber Monday, and that’s this Black Ops 2 Care Package, which is so awesome, it could very well reduce even a grown man to tears. If it doesn’t, the £160 price will. The bundle includes a remote control quadrocopter (officially called the MQ-27 Dragonfire Drone) which replicates the in-game air warfare technologies, minus any actual death; bonus maps including a 1950s nuclear zombie neighbourhood; limited edition game case;
game props, the official soundtrack and more. You don’t need it, but you do want it.Something New To Plug-In: A Volvo V60 DieselNevermind all your handheld technology to hook up to the mains, the world’s first diesel plug-in hybrid is here. And it’s a Volvo. The V60 Plug-In Hybrid has started production at the Swedes’ Torslanda plant in Gothenburg and the first batch of 1,000 due in 2013 has sold out, no doubt thanks to claims of 155.2mpg (combined), 32 miles on the lithium-type battery alone (slowest charge time for that is around 7.5 hours) and 280BHP. Production ramps up to 4,000-6,000 cars for 2014. But that’s not the only techno-wheels news this week. From next month, Ford debuts its clever MyKey tech in the UK, allowing parents (or car-sharing partners, or mates) to place restrictions on their offspring’s driving in the new MyKey-equipped Ford Fiesta. The technology allows you to program a key that restricts the top speed of the Fiesta, reduces the maximum volume of the audio system (boo!), and can even disable the audio system altogether if the driver and/or passengers are sacking off the safety belts.
