“Hi, I really love the Drone Commander and I am very sad and bummed now that its not being made.” We apologize sincerely to anybody who wanted a Drone Commander classic. It is not in production any more, and all stock is sold out. If you are seeking one, try eBay, and see the notes below about packing it carefully for shipping. There’s no need to message us ‘just in case’. What’s the story behind it? It was designed by me in about two weeks. More than 750 were assembled, largely by hand, largely by one person, over a span of six years. That is a lot of time to gather feedback from users and critically evaluate every feature, every manufacturing step, every failure mode, every business transaction, almost every molecule of a product. Not to mention the accumulation of personal insight on its playability, appearance, and sound quality. I spent three to five hours of my own time assembling each Drone Commander classic, and tested every one with my own hands and ears.

After making about 500 of them, it became tedious. After building another 250, I was more than ready to move on and apply the accumulated experience to newer designs.  Thousands of hours spent on assembly work, and thousands more hours spent on research and development for new ideas. Imagine you are a performing artist who has a hit with your first recording.  But, that was years ago, and now you’re still drowned with demands to perform it ad nauseam despite having newer material that you’re more proud of.  Maybe this isn’t a perfect analogy, but if it helps you sympathize with our half of the equation, that’s the intention. We are not frozen in time. Creative people and ideas must expand and reach ever further. In short, the decision to discontinue this product was not taken lightly. Thank you for helping our company grow. — Original Description — With a total of 9 knobs, the Drone Commander offers two manually-tuned oscillators and two LFOs, plus an unusually colorful and nasty filter.

LFO1 is an analog variable-shape oscillator, and LFO2 is a pulse waveform that auto-synchronizes to LFO1 at a ratio of 2x, 4x, 8x, or 16x. Both LFOs can be routed to the filter for rhythmic patterns. A line-level output jack is provided for connection to amplifiers or effects. — Shipping Instructions — Buying a used Grendel Drone Commander from somebody on eBay? Make sure the seller packages the item carefully to avoid shipping damage and D.O.A. merchandise.  Like most electronics, it can be damaged by dropping it on a hard surface.  Ask the seller to follow these guidelines: Do not use newspaper or styrofoam peanuts as packing material – only use bubble wrap Choose a box that allows at least two inches (5 cm) of clearance on all sides Wrap the unit with at least two inches (5 cm) of bubble wrap on all sides Label the box FRAGILE Grendel - Drone Commander 2 More than just an Eurorack variant of the popular but discontinued Drone Commander in the funky ammo box - the DC2 continues where its father left off.

It remains a drone-ish analog synthesizer with an unique, fantastic transistor sound and internal rhythmical modulation but it's been expanded by an envelope, a second filter, glide and more. Each of the twelve potentiometers has a switching function allowing you for even more control! The Drone Commander 2 consistrs of two oscillators between which you can crossfade. The mix is sent to two filters, a resonant bandpass and a switchable 24dB low pass filter. Internally there's a extensive clock generator and LFO section with a number of tempo multiplication and divider circuits. There are also two LFOs with fixed frequencies (0.55Hz and 0.75Hz) whose mix controls the oscillators' pulse widths. An AR-type envelope is responsible for modulating the cufoff of the -24dB low pass filter. OSC1 and OSC2: Control the oscillator frequency. Push/Pull function changes the wave form from square to sawtooth.. MIX determines the mixture between the oscillators. Pulling the potentiometer will mute the secons VCO.

TEMPO of the internal clock generator. Pulling the potentiometer activates pulse width modulation. LFO determines the frequency of the sawtooth LFOs which modulate the band pass filters. The frequency is a multiple or a division of TEMPO. Pulling the control will deactivate the slide effect (see below). SLIDE is activated once per LFO cycle and it processes the square waveform, alternating and fading between it and an inverted version of itself. The control determines the duration of the crossfade. When the control is pulled the routing to the filters will be changed (MIX passes either both filters serially or VCF2 only). MOD sets modulation intensity of the clock generator and the LFOs to the VCO pitch. If you press the potentiometer only VCO1 will be modulated. SWEEP controls the modulation intensity of the sawtooth modulation to VCF1’s cutoff frequency as well as the direction (rising or falling sawtooth). If you pull the potentiometer you will activate a second sawtooth modulation which has the TEMPO’s rate.

SHAPE is responsible for the waveshape of the pulse and mod waveforms, from asymmetric to symmetric. Pulling the pot will deactivate the modulation. FILTER is a cutoff control for the band pass filter. Pulling or pushing alternates between low and high frequency range. PULSE sets the modulation depth for both cutoff frequencies. Pushing or pulling the pot changes the timbre and the routing. ENV is a linear AR-type envelope generator which modulates the cutoff frequency of the 2dB low pass filter. Envelope times: 0.25 to 45 seconds. Pulling the pot opens the gate and therefor slowly the cutoff. The optional expander module adds plenty of functionality to the DC2e as it features a plethora of CV inputs as well as Clock/gate/trigger inputs and outputs.
