Flying toys used to be reserved for geeky enthusiasts on a sunny Sunday morning.But with the explosion in smartphone-powered drones, airborne gadgets have become more accessible to everyone.Now, two of the top players in the drone market have launched new and highly advanced flying machines.Parrot unveiled its Bebop at the end of last year, whilst DJI's new Phantom 3 took off last week.To see just how much fun these hi-tech toys are, we took delivery of the Parrot Bebop and, like a boy at Christmas, couldn’t wait to get it airborne.The Bebop is a fabulous piece of tech and even includes a full HD camera built into its body.It can take off and land itself, return home when lost and even fly a set route via GPS.So what’s the problem?Having had the drone for two weeks we discovered a range of issues that make owning a drone almost totally pointless.

Here’s our top five reasons you should think first before splashing the cash. 1. THE LAWWhen our drone arrived at Daily Star HQ we had all manner of brilliant ideas about where we would fly it.“Let’s soar it over Big Ben or buzz Buckingham Palace” one excited member of the team yelled.But, with a quick call to the Civil Aviation Authority, we realised that the rules on flying drones are tough.They can’t be flown in built-up areas or within 50 metres of people you don’t have control over.And they’ve just been banned in all of London’s royal parks with more exclusion zones expected to come soon.With these strict rules in place you’ll need to live deep in the countryside or have a garden the size of Wembley to enjoy it..................................................................................... 3. THE COSTWith an average price of over £400, buying a decent drone isn’t cheap.Clearly, there’s a lot of tech involved in getting these toys flying high and we understand why they are so pricey.But at this price how keen will you be to take it flying?

Our Parrot did survive everything that we put it through, but having almost lost it in a field full of bemused cows, we realised this could become an expensive hobby..................................................................................... 4. FLYING ITThe Parrot Bebop can be flown via your smartphone or tablet.We opted for our smartphone which makes it very tricky to fly.After hours of smashing into walls, landing on our neighbour's roof and chopping up most of the local vegetation we still hadn’t mastered flying it.Parrot do sell a brilliant controller, pictured above, but this adds £300 to the price of the drone.With practice you may become a top gun pilot but you’ll need a lot of patience.There’s another major issue with all drones and that's battery life.You'll only get around 10 to 15 minutes of flying time on one charge which becomes hugely frustrating..................................................................................... 5. PRIVACYMost modern machines, including the Bebop and Phantom 3 (above), have incredible HD cameras tucked inside.
