Even though I have keen interest in aviation, I’ve never been interested in flying radio-controlled aircraft as a hobby, until now. how much does a drone cost to makeThe combination of flying RC aircraft and using it for videography and mapping is intriguing. Couple that with the fact that RC aircraft have taken a huge leap in technology advancement, from accurate GNSS receivers, high-resolution digital cameras and highly sophisticated gimbals to the advanced flight control algorithms that makes flying drones relatively easy. Finally, take a company like DJI that designs and mass produces high-tech drones, and you have an RC aircraft with very advanced technology at an affordable price. Before buying a drone, the first decision is the type of airframe. Essentially, there are two types of airframes: rotorcraft (helicopter) and fixed-wing (airplane). For my first drone, I chose a rotorcraft, although I’ll likely pick up a fixed-wing drone sometime in the near future.
A couple of years ago, I bought a $350 AR Drone 2.0. To control the AR Drone 2.0, I use my Samsung Galaxy smartphone running Parrot’s AR Drone FreeFlight software. Steering is as simple as tilting the smartphone in the direction you want to turn the rotorcraft. At $350, I treated it as a training tool. We (my kids and I) flew it outdoors, indoors, without prop guards, etc. During Halloween, we even tried to hang some ghoulish decorations on it and fly it around in the dark. The AR Drone still runs, but we’ve glued parts or replaced parts that broke and it’s seen some rough landings, hit a few walls and been tangled up in a tree or two. It never did well in windy conditions. Once it went above the roof-line of the house. It got pretty unstable when there were any sort of windy conditions. But, it served its purposed in helping me practice flying a drone without having to worry about crashing a more high-tech and delicate one. I’d been waiting for the right next-gen drone to come along to make my next purchase.
While I had some air time on the DJI Phantom 2, it had enough drawbacks that I didn’t want to invest in one. When DJI released the Phantom 3 a few months ago, I waited awhile for the reviews to be published. The reviews were positive and the specs looked good, so I bought one a few weeks ago. My biggest concern was the digital camera. I didn’t want a camera that suffered from the fish-eye effect like I’d heard about the GoPro. The Phantom 3 uses a Sony Exmor 12 megapixel camera engine, providing crisp images in 4000 x 3000 resolution and rich video in 4096 x 2160 resolution (at 30 frames per second). There’s no shortage of stunning videos on YouTube showing the capabilities of the camera and gimbal on the Phantom 3. Speaking of gimbal, it’s the device the attaches the camera to the body of the drone. The Phantom 3 uses a three-axis gimbal so you can turn and twist the camera, independently of the direction the drone is flying, to get the best shot. The gimbal connection to the drone has shock absorbers, so video appears very smooth with absolutely no vibration experienced from the drone.
Besides the advanced technology on the Phantom 3 itself, the flight control system is a major upgrade from the AR Drone 2.0. Instead of using a smartphone or tablet as the flight controller, the Phantom 3 has dedicated handheld flight controller, complete with joysticks. That’s not to say your smartphone or tablet cannot be used. On the contrary — although not required, a smartphone or tablet is a critical component of the flight control system as it acts as the display and runs the optional DJI Pilot app. Before I purchased the Phantom 3, I read that an iPad Mini was the best companion for displaying the camera image/video in real time as well as running the DJI Pilot. Fortunately, I already had an iPad Mini 2. I also have an iPad Air (10-inch screen), and I think it’s a bit too big to mount on the flight controller. The iPad Mini really is a perfect size for the flight controller. You can point the camera straight down and see the crisp 12 megapixel camera view right on the iPad mini screen before taking a shot.
After the anxiety of making the first flight without crashing the $1,500 drone, flying the Phantom 3 is very straight-forward. It really doesn’t want to do anything except hover, and it does that quite well. The specification says horizontal hover accuracy is 1.5 meters while the vertical hover accuracy is 0.5 meters. With a compass sensor, visual sensors, a GNSS receiver and sophisticated software algorithms, it holds its position quite steadily. There’s a Return to Home (RTH) button on the flight controller — when pressed, the Phantom 3 will return to where it launched, within reason. As a regular user of RTK, I dream about being able to upgrade the mediocre-performing GNSS receiver with an RTK receiver so it would land within a few centimeters of where it took off. For now, I have to be satisfied that it lands within three meters or so of where it launched. So, enough about the drone vehicle. What about the imagery it can generate for mapping? I’m still in the testing phase of just how accurately I’m able to produce imagery.
