Parrot hat für seine Flugdrohne AR.Drone 2.0 ein kleines GPS-Modul zum Anstecken angekündigt. Damit wird es nicht nur möglich, den geflogenen Weg wie bei einem Flugdatenschreiber aufzuzeichnen und sich ihn nachher auf einer Karte anzusehen, sondern auch, den Kurs vorab inklusive gewünschter Höhenangaben auf einer Karte per Fingerzeig zu definieren. Die Drohne fliegt diesen Parcours dann selbstständig ab und kann dabei filmen und fotografieren. Wird die Drohne hingegen manuell über das Tablet per App gesteuert, gibt es mit der Return-Home-Taste nun die Möglichkeit, die Drohne automatisch direkt zum Piloten zurückzufliegen. Das GPS-Modul kostet rund 130 US-Dollar. Wer will, kann mit der Open-Source-Software QGround Control über das Kommunikationsprotokoll Mavlink die Drohne ebenfalls ansteuern. Ein Team an der Uni Delft in den Niederlanden hat gar die Autopilotsoftware Paparazzi an die AR-Drone angebunden. Deren Idee ist es, den Flugpfad am Rechner mit Paparazzi bestimmen zu können und ihn dann auf die Drohne zu übertragen, die den Kurs dann autonom abfliegt.

Passend dazu hat Parrot auch einen neuen Akku für die Drohne angekündigt, der die Flugzeit um 50 Prozent verlängern soll. Der neue Lithium-Polymer-Akku soll Flüge bis zu 18 Minuten ermöglichen und 70 US-Dollar kosten.FreeFlight2.4 soll außerdem mit dem Film Director Mode eine Funktion erhalten, mit der die Drohne rund um ein Objekt so bewegt werden kann wie ein Kamera-Dolly - nur ohne Schienen. Der Pilot gibt beispielsweise vor, dass die Drohne eine Panoramaaufnahme machen oder sich nach oben bewegen soll wie bei einem Kamerakran. Der Director-Mode ist als In-App-Kauf für 3,99 US-Dollar erhältlich. Die Filme lassen sich auf dem iPad schneiden und nachträglich per Software-Bildstabilisierung entwackeln.
